to only sketch, no airbrush or chalk brushes, but I still like

A
few people have asked for the meatloaf cake recipe, and that has
prompted me to finish an overhaul project that I've been working
on. This is yet another blog of mine, one that I used to keep up
regularly, just on food, recipes, and cooking. I've revamped the
format to make searching for recipes easier, and deleted a bunch of
unnessessary posts. Click here to

Create by destroying
Monday, September 03, 12:24 PM
My Thing today is creating something new through destruction.
Almost 8 years ago, at Holiday Gift Giving time, I got my kids a
funky bunk-bed. The metal kind with a folding couch to double sized
futon bottom, and twin mattress size top. This saved space
replacing their two twin beds, and gave them a cool couch to sit
on. I bought the bed with an 'overtime bonus' which meant to me
that my personal blood, sweat, and tears went into buying them this
gift. The bottom stopped folding into a couch a few years back, and
they haven't even shared a room for almost two years now. In
switching who's in what room, the huge project that we've been
undertaking for the last few weeks, and will continue for a few
more, it was decided (by them) that the broken old bed was no
longer needed. So to create their new room spaces, and honor their
growing-up-too-quickly desires, I took apart a piece of their
childhood, and carried it to the trash this weekend. And as I write
this now, barely able to see through my tears, I have to remember,
'out with the old, in with the new.'
Meatloaf Cake
Friday, August 31, 09:57 PM

Yesterday, I took the afternoon to make Bryan's surprise birthday supper: Meatloaf Cake. I'd seen them around the interwebs, and I thought it would be the perfect 'cake' for a diabetic's birthday.

He likes it! Hey Mikey!

Have you ever made a wish list on
Amazon or somewhere like that? Forget all about those lists, this
is the ultimate wish list! You can 'wish' for anything on any
website, and it has a plugin for some browser windows, too, so one
click wisting is at my fingertips. Plus, when looking around at
others' wists, I found that some folks use their wist to list
projects they'd like to do. I may have to make a second wist for
all the tutorials! Come wist with me! (as always, my username is

I don't watch a lot of reality shows.
In general, reality television needs to be a fad that is over! But
one of my favorite shows right now is a reality show, but it's so
much better than regular reality television. Who Wants to be a
Superhero? on Sci Fi, is campy, fun, exciting, adorable, and
inspiring. After watching it last night, I fell asleep thinking
about what my superhero name, costume, and ablities would be. I was
going to make her in Hero Machine, which the kids have been playing with
a lot lately, but the SciFi website had something better!

Thirty Years Ago
Thursday, August 16, 07:23 AM
OK,
I like Elvis's music as much as the next guy. The next guy that's
not camped outside Graceland right now. It occurred to me that
there is not 'Day the Music Died' kind of song commemorating
Elvis's death, so let me present a song for today.
Thirty Years Ago Today
sung to Sgt Pepper's Lonly Hearts Club Band
It was thirty years ago today,
Fat Elvis could no longer play.
He was long since out of style,
Been playin' Vegas for quite a while.
So let me say something to you,
Something we've all known for years:
Elvis Presley OD'ed on the can.
Yeah, Elvis Presley OD'ed on the can.
It wasn't much of a show.
Elvis Presley OD'ed on the can.
What a crappy way to go!
We'd like you to see Graceland,
It really is quite nice.
You're such a lovely fanbase,
You can afford the price.
Yeah, Elvis Presley OD'ed on the can.
It wasn't much of a show.
Elvis Presley OD'ed on the can.
What a crappy way to go!
Oh, Elvis Presley OD'ed,
Elvis Presley OD'ed,
Elvis Presley OD'ed on the CAN!

Rolling For Kindness
Thursday, August 09, 05:49 PM
Thinking and talking with Bryan about
his game idea, made me think more about a couple games I had ideas
for. Here's one, sorry no fancy pdf.
Rolling for Kindness
Grab two dice, if you don't have any dice handy, you can use this. Roll to see what kind act you will be performing today. Finish the act before you go to bed.
2. Say 'hello' to a stranger.
3. Leave change in the pop or candy machine.
4. Roll again. Smile at that number of people.
5. Strike up a pleasant conversation with a coworker that you normally don't chat with.
6. Pick up trash as you walk.
7. Buy yourself a flower. You need to be kind to yourself, too.
8. Leave some reading material (book/magazine/paper) in a public place.
9. Give a really good tip to your server or cashier.
10. Send a card to someone telling them how much they mean to you.
11. Offer assistance to an older person.
12. Donate something to a shelter.

Most of the time, when my Thing is
something artsy &/or crafty, I also post something about it on
my other blog, See Shell's
Schemes. My
template designer also made me this awesome button, thanks
again, Zoe!

So I have added this button to the sidebar, and gone back through all the posts here, and added this button as a link to those posts that are crafty. I also added one of three phrases with links to specific posts:
Cross Post -- this just means that I've also made the same post on the other blog
More on this Thing -- this means there is more to the story, and you can get the in-depth story
See shell's two cents -- I'll use this when I'm writing about something that Bryan made
There will often be more pictures on the other blog, and usually more photos on flickr, when you click on any photo.

Cell Phone Holder
Friday, August 03, 09:59 PM
Now that I have my own pene del diablo (for emergency
use only!), I decided it needed it's own case. After all, it will
mostly just be in my purse.

I used denim and felt, and I seriously had to hold back from beading it, but since there may be times that Bryan will carry it instead of driving around for two hours trying to buy prepaid long distance phone cards, I didn't want it to be too girly. (You're welcome, Honey.)

Green Salsa
Thursday, August 02, 09:50 PM
- 9 medium tomatillo tomatoes
- 4 clove garlic, peeled
- 2 jalapeno chile pepper
- 2 bunches fresh cilantro
- 7 ripe avocados
- Chop cilantro, dice garlic and chile, cut tomatillos into thumb-sized pieces.
- Cut avocados in half, remove pit, and squish flesh out of skin.
- Puree all ingredients in blender, you might have to do it in batches, depending on how big your blender is. If you have a food processor, that would probably work even better, but I've never used one, so I can't say
- For best taste and dipping value, refrigerate for several hours or overnight
- Serve on tacos, or use as dip

Quarter Project Part 2
Tuesday, July 17, 09:04 PM
A while back, I posted Part 1 of this project, go read that for the
background, if you want. What I'm doing is kind of an anonymous art
project, introducing painted coins into the mainstream. These coins
are all painted with fingernail polish, unlike the sharpie markers,
this should stay on the coins for a while.
This bunch of multicolored coins, all went into the candy machine at work. And did you know, if you put coins in and press the coin return, you don't get the exact coins back? My painted minions are working their way into regular society.
Excellent.

Thanks to loyal TTOTD reader Cassie, I

I found several cool things to do and make on their site, an adventure game, an awesome mobile, and a memory game, all that that you can download and put together and play or hang. And, this glider, which I printed in black and white so I could color it myself. Don't you think a purple, pink, and green bomb pop would taste great?

Tin Whistle: The Beginning
Wednesday, June 06, 08:34 PM
Last Saturday, I
purchased a Irish Tin Whistle. Learning the Tin Whistle is
something I've been interested in for a while, so I was excited to
finally find one. The music store had three choices, and I got the
one that had a book included. ('cause I'm smrt!) I've probably
practiced a total of two hours since Saturday, so I'm far from a
vurtuoso, but please enjoy my first recording on my new instrument
by clicking on the "podcast" link below.
The song is an Irish Single Jig called Rogha Mhaoir Ui Chathail. (but don't ask me how to pronounce it!)

Googly Eyes
Monday, June 04, 07:39 PM

I bought a package of Googly Eyes, and I had to have a cool place to keep them! So I collaged the lid, and glitter glued some eyes around, too!

P.S. I uploaded a new picture for the Felted Flower with Beaded Blanket stitch. The other picture did not have a frame of reference so you could see how small it really is, and that old background was too busy for my eyes!

is, is a submission of my photos to Board Game Geek. An awesome site where you

have half the games I own listed yet.

Yahtzee! pt 1
Wednesday, May 30, 11:57 PM
Two things I love are gaming (that is to
say, the playing of games) and 'thrifting' (the art of finding
something really cool at a thrift store, garage sale, or auction).
So combining the two is pure bliss for me. (Combining a third thing
I really love, crafting, into the mix, will be nirvana. Stay
tuned...)Today I thrifted a game. And the first 'thing' that it is
is a photograph:

Felted Flower
Friday, May 25, 10:30 PM

With beaded blanket stitch. Flower is about 1" x 1 1/2" and puffy. I see several felted flowers or other such fluffies in the future. Not sure yet exactly what they're going to turn into just yet.

Lost: Through the Looking Glass
Thursday, May 24, 10:12 PM
i.e. my thoughts on what happened on
the season 3 finale, and what will happen in season 4.

Recap of season finale:
*the fast forward was just a dream brought on by the smoke monster (as seen in drawing) as proven by Jack's father being dead, but he refers to him in the fast forward, and in Kate not being in jail in the fast forward (she's a fugitive, if she gets off the island, she still is a fugitive!)
*Ben thought the shot or the fall would re-paralize Locke
*Why were Sun and Jin in the plane with Jack? (or were they?)
*The commercials gave too much away, like Des shooting the cyclops in the looking glass hatch, and the three shooters on the beach not being dead
*Charlie could be NOT DEAD. There might be an air bubble or something. If he is dead, that was a cheap, unmourned death, like the supporting actors that were buried alive
*Why does the transmission go straight to Penny?
*Maybe the flight 815 crash was all Jack's fault just like the lady on the bridge's crash ended up being all Jack's fault.
*The reason children are taken off the island, is because they will age quicker when they are off the island.
Predictions for Season 4:
*Ben and the origional islananders "purged" the Dharma group, Naomi and her ship are Dharma people trying to get back to the island
* The guy from Suddenly Susan is actually running everything
*Everyone on the island now will have to work together to stop the Dharma ship people
*Penny's transmission is just her continuing to search for Des, and it was being blocked
*"Jacob" is just an acronym for Just A Creation Of Ben's

Lost Prediction
Wednesday, May 23, 09:49 PM
Here's a quickly scribbled drawing to
show my prediction of what will happen on tonight's season finale
of LOST. (Yes, I see what time it is, but I haven't watched it yet,
it's on the TiVo)

To clarify:
You see, those two girls Charlie met in the looking glass hatch (Bambi and Thumper are their nicknames) are decedents of the island's original, original inhabitants, that date back to ancient times. These people worshiped a parthenon of gods and made statues all over the island to please them, the foot is the last of what remains of these. After interrogating Charlie, they decide the person they most want to talk to is Locke, who they search for and find, almost dead, so they take him to the foot of the foot to pray to their god to heal him.
OK, seriously. I predict the two girls aren't bad guys, that Locke AND Charlie will live, and we will again see the giant foot statue!
Now, off to actually watch!!
(And remind me next time to make my prediction a little sooner!)

right now. You have to click on this link since I don't know how to
make a screen print, sorry. And I'm so out of it from the migraine,
that I even forgot to sign my work. Now you know that's pretty
bad.

Edit: So now I've learned how to do a screen grab!

Quarter Project Part 1
Monday, May 21, 06:26 PM
I've had this art project idea for a
while now, and bear with me, it's still in progress. The idea is
kind of an anonymous form of Where's George (click for link), in which I
would put into circulation quarters or other coins that have been
altered. I thought perhaps my art project was a little strange,
being completely anonymous, and never knowing where the change
went, but recently, this story appeared on Boing Boing (click for
link), and that raised my interest in continuing.
Today, we see part 1, my first idea was to use my cool new permanent markers to draw on the quarters, sometimes incorporating the state picture, other times, just making a political statement (and utterly human wish). I like how the peach turned out on Georgia, and I could really see some potential, but it was very time consuming to produce, and the marker was very quick to become not permanent after being handled a bit. Nonetheless, I put all of these into circulation not too long after this blog and contest began.

Tiny baby bunny, who lives in a bush on the 1 1/2 block walk between work and parking lot. Unfortunately, his sibling became a street splat this morning. I cried a little. Read More...

Self Portrait with SVU
Thursday, May 10, 07:06 AM

As a photography project and in an effort to see myself as others see me, I am going to start experimenting with self portraits. Self portrait does not necessarily mean a face shot, obviously, I've seen many creative self portraits on flickr that do not include the full face. I've also started a new page on my photo part of the blog just for the self portraits.
24 hours of flickr
Wednesday, May 09, 09:06 PM
May 5, 2007 was a special flickr day,
24 hours of flickr. Any and every flickr-ite was invited to take a
photo of their day. Whatever they wanted to show their day, a
day-in-the-life. Everyone can post one photo taken on that day to
the big pool, and some of the photos will be chosen to be in a
flickr book that will be coming out. This is my contribution.

A Few Little Things
Tuesday, May 08, 09:50 PM

This was going to be my 'thing' today. Money with my honey. But since somebody made funny money and a bunch of other things, I would look pretty lame just posting this money. Hey, sometimes a thing takes a couple days, sometimes it takes a couple minutes.
In the spirit of trying not to be too lame, though, I'll add a couple more little things into this post! So it's a bonus, huzzah!
#2) All the people who left comments left in April were put into a random drawing, and the winner is: ZEB! And no, he didn't get entered as often as he posted, just once. In fact, we had 6 people entered, and a total of 10 prizes, so if the rest of you would like a button, too, just let me know.
And Lastly for today, a little guessing game, which will be answered later this week. What is this?
ScrapBlog
Monday, May 07, 12:55 PM
My folks brought some pictures this
weekend that they had made digital from slides. There were some
cute shots of me and my younger brother that I don't ever remember
seeing before. The new photos prompted me to make a new ScrapBlog
page.

Here's a 'mod' kind of craft I made
for my car. I took a regular tree air freshener, and beaded
decorations on it.

April Buttons
Monday, April 30, 06:52 AM

Here's a set of ten small buttons, made from a button kit. Some drawn, some made from magazine pictures. All sporting our web address.
And by the way, today's the last day of April, and every comment left in April will be put into a random drawing, so today is the last day to get entered into the contest.
Hmmm, can you guess what the prize might be?

Letter
Monday, April 23, 06:46 AM
This weekend I sent the following
letter to all of the 'family and friends' I could find in our
address book, in two e-mails, one from The G, one from me,
depending on how you know us. (I know one of my aunties won't even
open an e-mail if she doesn't recognize the name) One thing I
learned is that our address book is terribly un-updated, so forgive
me if I left you off, I'll be working on updating our address book!
The other thing that I learned is Murphey's law as it applies to
e-mail: as soon as you hit send, you'll remember what you
forgot to write! What I left out of the e-mail was inviting you-all
again to the forums page, and asking you to please send our
site address, or the whole e-mail, to anyone you think might find
it interesting. Thanks.
Dear Family and Friends:

Bryan and I have taken on a new presence on the interweb.
The Thing Of The Day is a blog website with a contest. Every week day Bryan and I will each post a 'thing', photography, comics, crafts, whatever. (Shelly's definition and Bryan's pdf definition) We'll see who can stick it out the longest, a contest of endurance. Here's the 'official' rules. (Weren't we cute as babies! And if you can't figure out who is who, my kids have informed me that my photo is in black and white because I'm older!)
Please check it out. While you're at it, check out the disclaimer page. We know that we don't all share the same opinions or sense of humor, so please decide what is appropriate for you &/or your kids.
Feel free to leave us comments. All comments left in April will be entered into a random drawing.

If you comment on this post that you received our letter, I'll put you in the April drawing twice! Read More...
